PRP Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma?

PRP is a form of regenerative medicine that uses your own blood to help heal damaged tissue and improve health and function. By using your own blood, there’s very little risk and many health benefits.

Dr. Dimowo creates your PRP from a sample of your own blood by spinning it in a centrifuge, which separates out the healing properties found in your blood, including platelets, growth factors, and specialized protein.

Athletes use PRP to heal sports injuries so they can get back in the game faster without the need for surgery or other invasive treatments.

How does PRP work?

PRP works by accelerating your body’s own natural healing powers. In addition to helping you heal faster, PRP also improves function and reduces your pain.

When injected into an injured or damaged part of your body, the healing properties in your PRP get to work and start repairing the damage.

What are some of the common uses of PRP?

Dr. Dimowo is a regenerative medicine specialist and uses PRP for many injuries and health concerns. Some of the most common conditions that may benefit from PRP include:

  • Arthritis
  • Tendon or ligament injuries
  • Fractures
  • Tendonitis
  • Tendonosis
  • Rotator cuff tears

PRP may also be used to help accelerate healing after a surgical procedure.

Dr. Dimowo not only uses PRP for health issues, but also for aesthetic purposes. He can combine PRP with dermal fillers to provide what’s called a nonsurgical face-lift. He injects both the fillers and PRP into precise areas of your skin to smooth out lines and add volume.

The PRP not only adds volume, but also stimulates your skin to produce collagen, new blood vessels, and fatty tissue to improve the overall health and look of your skin and improve the longevity of your filler treatment.

How should I prepare for PRP treatments?

Dr. Dimowo provides specific instructions on how to prepare for your PRP injections. You may be advised to refrain from the use of anti-inflammatory medication prior to your injections.

Anti-inflammatory medication may interfere with the effectiveness of your treatment by counteracting the inflammatory process induced by the PRP.

PRP injections don’t usually require downtime. However, Dr. Dimowo may suggest activity modifications depending on your needs.
